Driving Simulation Lab Upgraded
Over the last year, NYSCEDII has worked to convert the Furnas 106 Motion Simulation Lab into a dedicated Driving Simulation Lab. The rehab work has moved the lab from a single-screen, entertainment-cabin based driving simulator to a three-screen, real vehicle driving simulator. The existence of such facilities are limited in the US. The facilities and research staff at NYSCEDII are expected to help research initiatives across the university in areas related to transportation design and safety, driver behavior, and vehicle technology development. A number of collaborations between UB faculty and the NYSCEDII Driving Simulator have already begun.
The specific advancements made in the last year include:
- the addition of the front half of a 1999 Ford Contour
- expansion to three screens with an approximate 120-degree field of view
- upgrade of projectors and other hardware to accommodate traffic simulation
